Date- 24 -11- 2005 Rape cases spreading in Rakhaing State
The 25 th November is an International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. International h eroines who undertook riskily to occur this day are honoured with this paper. One this day, international women organisations have been demonstrating to be aware of lives of women who have been suffering from abuses by various means. Like other ethnic nationalities women organisations of Burma, our Rakhaing Women's Union (RWU) in cooperation with men and women from other political organisations based in Dhaka, have also been demonstrating for: morally encouraging Rakhaing women and other ethnic nationalities women of Burma who suffered and are suffering from abuses danger within and outside the country, eliminating violence against women, undertaking such activities and remembering this day forever. Since General Ne Win took state power by military coup in 1962, many of Rakhaing women along with other nationalities women also have been suffering from abuses, sexually in particular by the Ne Win's military troops. Although suffering from those abuses, many women did not dare to reveal them due to preservation of their women dignity. "The 22 rape cases have occurred publicly throughout Rakhaing State in this year alone. There can be many more unknown cases and so it is not only responsible for women but also for men to search for revelation of such unjust cases," said Saw Mra Raza Linn, Chairperson of RWU . "These cases are committed by soldiers and policemen. More regretful fact is that Chairperson and members of Rakhaing State Women's Affairs Committee [formed by Burmese military junta to counter opposition women and political organisations] are being involved in those rape cases occurring in Rakhaing State ," she pointed out. Besides those rape cases occurring throughout Rakhaing State , to eliminate violence against Rakhaing women in various methods, Rakhaing Women's Union (RWU) demands the following points:
-
To stop forced blood-mixing throughout Burma .
-
To take necessary action the committed accused according to the law.
-
To compensate victim women in accordance with international standards.
-
To step up effective measures by the military government for eliminating violence and abuses throughout Burma .
-
To pull out SPDC troops from ethnic territories.
-
To release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, U Khun Tun Oo and other political prisoners unconditionally.
-
To call tripartite dialogue to resolve political crisis in Burma .
